ought to do/ought do ¹

在美国英语中，只有在否定句或疑问句中，ought to 中的 to 才可以省略。在肯定句中 to 是绝不容许省略的：

1. They ought not(to) do that sort of thing.(CGEL) 他们不应该做那类事。

2. Oughtn't we(to) send for the police? (CGEL) 我们是不是该叫警察呢?

3. You ought not to do that. (Chambers) 你不应该做那件事。

此外，在省略句中也可以省略 to:

“Ought he to go?” “Yes, he ought.” (ALD) “他应该走了吗?” “是的。”
