material 用作可数名词时是指“物质材料”（the substance out of which a thing is constructed），如 building material（建筑材料），raw materials（原材料）；用作不可数名词时，则是指“文字资料”“素材”（knowledge of fact, from which action may be taken or a work may be produced），如 I am now collecting material for a new book. [我正在为写一本新书收集资料（素材）]。看来原文中的 material 是指后一含义。由于译者忽略了可数名词与不可数名词的区别，便误译了该词的词义，因而，也误译了句子的语法关系：把 of 短语仅仅看作是 methods 的定语，其实，它是 material 和 mehtods 的共同的定语。
