out/out of

out of 只能用作介词,其后必定跟有名词或代词,而 out 在英国英语中只能用作副词。out of 是介词 into 的反义词,通常表示移动方向(偶尔也表示位置),而 out 是副词 in 的反义词,既可表示位置,也可表示方向:

1. We ran out of the house. 我们从房子里跑了出来。

2. He gets out of the lift. Then he walks to a bus stop. 他从电梯里出来。然后向公共汽车站走去。

3. I phoned Steve but he was out. 我给史蒂夫打过电话，他不在。

4. The boss is out now ... 老板出去了……

5. Let's go out for a drive. 让我们驱车到外面兜一圈。

[附注]在美国英语中 out 也可以用作介词,代替 out of:

1. Our cat jumped out the window. (DCAE) 我们的猫从窗户跳了出去。

2. She turned and went out the back door. 她转身从后门走了出去。
