《英语惯用法大词典》(p.254)说：
“bring up 和 educate 含义不同,前者指孩子在家里所受到的道德和社交教育,后者指在学校所受到的文化和学业方面的教育。如果说一个孩子 badly brought up,便指这孩子不懂礼貌,不诚实等,说一个人 well-educated 则指他受过良好教育。再如:Lucy was brought up by her grandparents and educated at the local convent school. Would you rather be well brought up and badly educated, or the opposite?”
《牛津英语用法指南》(p.129)也是这么说的：
“我们一般用 bring up(及其名词形式 upbringing)表示孩子在家里受到的道德和社交训练。educate 和 education 则用来表示人们在中小学、大学等场所受到的训练(特别是智能和文化方面的训练)。如果我们说一个孩子 badly brought up,那可能意味着这孩子不懂礼貌或自私自利。说一个人 well-educated 则是说他上过好的学校或好的大学。Lucy was brought up by her grandparents and educated at the local convent school. 露西是由祖父母抚养大的,是在当地一所女修道院设立的学校上的学。
Would you rather be well brought up and badly educated, or the opposite? 你是愿意受到良好的家庭教育而受不到良好的学校教育，还是希望受不到良好的家庭教育，而受到良好的学校教育？”
但是上面的说法似乎与下列实际用法相矛盾：

上引两部书的说法基本上是正确的,但是,需要加以补充。CGEL指出:“We can see a metaphorical appropriateness in bring up for ‘educate’...”(“我们可能看到bring up的一个恰当的比喻用法:‘教育’。”)这就是说,bring up除了指“家庭教育”之外,还可指“社会教育”“学校教育”“宗教教育”以及“党的教育”:
