I walked straight back to school.
语法书上说，只有在表示“上学”“上课”“在校学习”这层含义时，在school之前才可以省略冠词：be in school, go to school, be at school。但在上面的句子里，school显然是指建筑物，但为什么其前没有冠词呢？

总的来说,当指具体的建筑物时,在 school(church)之前是要用冠词的。但是,现在在美国英语中有一种趋势:即使在指建筑物时,school 或 church 也省略冠词:
