the proper style 与 the style proper 意义是否相同?
形容词 proper 用作前置定语与用作后置定语, 意义是不同的。这一点跟 available, possible, suitable 等形容词不同。the proper style 是指“适当的语体(风格)”, 而 the style proper 则是指“严格意义上的语体(风格)”或“语体(风格)本身”。
这就是说,形容词 proper 的位置决定于它的词义。当它作“真正的”“本身的”“严格意义上的”(as strictly defined, in the strict sense of the word)解时,应当放在名词之后:
