在非正式的语体中,so 可以引导目的从句,又可以引导结果从句,有没有办法区分这两种 so 从句呢?
正像 R. Quirk 等人所指出的,结果分句和目的分句无论在从属连词方面或者在意义方面均有交错现象。结果分句与目的分句的语义区别仅仅在于:结果分句表达的是事实,而不是推论。其实两者都表示结果,只是在结果分句中结果已经成为现实,而在目的从句中结果尚未成为现实——一种希望其实现的结果。从语法形式上看,目的从句常常需要情态动词 (can, could, may, might, should, would)。R. Quirk 等人列举了下列一组句子以示区别:
We paid him immediately, so (that) he left contented. (结果)
We paid him immediately so (that) he would leave contented. (目的)
我们立即给他付了款,结果他满意地走了。
我们立即给他付了款,以便让他满意地离去。
类例:
- I'll send him our proposals now so he can have time to consider them before the meeting. (目的)
我现在就把我们的建议送交给他,以便他在开会之前有时间考虑这些建议。

They wanted it, so (that) they agreed to pay more than the normal price. (CGEL) (结果) 他们需要它, 所以同意付给超过正常价格的钱。

He went to the lecture early, so he got a good seat. (结果) 他很早就去课堂,所以有个好座位。

- The school closes earlier so (that) the children can get home before dark. (目的)(CGEL) 学校提前放学, 让孩子们能在天黑前回家。
Wood 说, 在引出结果从句的 so 之前, 应当有个逗号, 而在引出目的从句的 so 之前则不需加逗号:
He injured his foot, so he was unable to play in the match. (Wood)
他的一只脚受伤了,所以他未能参加比赛。
但是,目的状语从句也常常使用不含情态动词的陈述语气来说明实现目的的信心:
He's going to the lecture early so (that) he'll get a good seat.
他要早点儿去听讲,以便得到一个好座位。
反过来说,结果状语有时候也使用情态动词。这样一来,目的状语从句和结果状语从句就更难以区分了。这说明,在许多情况下要根据句意和上下文来确定从句的类型。
If someone is limp, they have no strength or energy in their body, so that they can be moved easily. (EED)
如果说某人软弱无力,那就是说他的身体没有力气和精力,以致很容易被移动。
