“参考答案”认为该句 A 处有误,应改为 except 或 but。但是,我在美国语言学家 P. G. Perrin 的 Reference Handbook of Grammar and Usage 一书中查到一个正面例句,与上面的错句,在用法上是完全相同的:

上面的试题以及 Perrin 的例句真的把我弄糊涂了。请释疑。
我相信在你读了R.Quirk等人在CGEL中所作的简单明了的阐述之后，这个问题在你心目中便会马上豁然开朗：
"In the negative, the difference is cancelled out, so that the following two sentences are synonymous:
No one passed Richard. " (CGEL)
