核心问题
《英语常用词用法辞典》(北京大学编)说:various后面只能跟复数名词。但我却读到这样的句子：
He is a man of various talent. (《英汉大辞典》)

various由于其本身的词义(各种各样的,多种多样的,很多),在多数情况下只能跟复数名词连用:

People of various backgrounds applied for the job. (MD) 各种不同背景的人都来申请这个职位。

There were various questions he wanted to ask ... (EED) 他想提问各种各样的问题……

但是，在少数情况下，various 也可跟单数(不可数)名词搭配，如 various reading(多方面的阅读)，a list of various equipment for photography(各种摄影设备一览表)。
