脱离上下文，may not 是个歧义结构。I may not go. 可以理解为：I am not allowed to go. （不允许我走。），也可以理解为：I probably will not go. （我也许不走或我可能不走。）但是 may not 在任何情况下都不作“不可能”解。cannot 才作“不可能”解。例如：
