句中的 the rest 是指“其它地区”吗？
孤立地看,把 the rest of the world 译为“世界其它地区”是没有错误的,因为 the rest of A 通常就是指“A 的其他(它)部分,A 的其余部分”。例如,the rest of the world/my life/hermoney(世界的其它地方/我的余生/她剩下的钱)。但是上面的译法会使我们提出这样一个问题:马丁·路德·金“为世界其它地区树立了榜样”,他是否也为美国树立了榜样呢?是否也为美国人民树立了榜样呢?答案显然是肯定的。那么,说“他为全世界其它地区树立了榜样”,岂不是犯了逻辑错误?
要知道, the rest of the world 也可以作“世界上其他的人”解。
