据 B. Foster 考证, the turn of the century 这个比较现代的短语在本世纪五十年代才开始在英国通用。但当时人们对这个颇为流行的短语的理解是不同的。有些作者用它来指“本世纪中期”; 有些作者则用它来指“世纪末”, 例如:
