《高中英语解题题典》(东北师大出版社, p.64) 对上题作了如下解答:
“答案为 A。对话一方用现在时说出一件事，对方应循着思路询问，其他三个时态都不直接与上句相联系。”
但是，在下面的句子里，并没有人“用现在时说出一件事”，为什么也用了现在时呢？Now the manager has found that things are missing. He says that all this happened after I started work.

上面的解释是不恰当的。关于使用 says 的原因，见 say 。此外，选项 B(said) 也是完全正确的。正像 CGEL 的作者们所说：“这些句子如果使用一般过去时……也是可以的。”
