Don't drink \left\{ \begin{array}{l} and or \end{array} \right\} drive.

在英语否定句里，当逐项(单独地)否定各个成分时，要使用连接词or，而不能使用and。例如：

1. He never smokes or drinks. 他不吸烟，也不喝酒。

2. No smoking or spitting. 请勿吸烟吐痰。

3. He did not know any editors or writers. 他既不认识编辑，也不认识作家。

如果在否定句中使用 and, 则表示连接起来的两个或两个以上的部分是作为结合起来的一个整体而被否定的。Don't drink and drive. 这个口号所禁止的既不是单独的 drink, 也不是单独的 drive 这些行为, 而是 drink 和 drive 结合在一起的行为。这就是说, or 具有分离的意义, 而 and 具有结合的意义。请比较:

1. Don't drink or drive. 不许喝酒，也不许开车。

2. $\{\$text{Don't drink and drive.} 不许酒后开车。

She cannot sing or dance. 她不会唱歌，也不会跳舞。

She cannot sing and dance. 她不能边唱歌边跳舞。

.He wouldn't lend his books to Tom or Alice.

他不愿把书借给汤姆，也不愿把书借给爱丽斯。（分离地、单独地）

He wouldn't lend his books to Tom and Alice.

他不愿把书借给汤姆和爱丽斯二人。(结合意义)

4. You can't eat your cake and have it. 你不能吃了你的蛋糕而又拥有它——二者不可兼得。(谚语)

应当指出，否定句中的 or，在某些方面等于连接两个分句的 and。

1. He doesn't have long hair or wear jeans. = He doesn't have long hair and he doesn't wear jeans. 他既不留长发，也不穿牛仔裤。

2. They have no books or magazines for sale. = They have no books and no magazines for sale. 他们既没有书可卖，也没有杂志可卖。

我国翻译出版物常常把否定句中的 or 误译为表示选择关系的“或”。例如：

1. But even he was unable to discover how long the gorilla lives, or how or why it dies, nor was he able to define the exact social pattern of the family groups, or indicate the final extent of their intelligence. (New Concept English, Book 4, p.17)

我们完全不同意上面的解答。我们认为，应将(C)中的to do much改为do much。因为并列连词or所连接的并不是an improvement和选项C，而是account for与选项C[即will(account for... or do much)]。全句的意思是：有一些人认为下面的说法是值得怀疑的：这些与防御有关的研究项目会说明生活水平的改善,或者会为保护我们的日益减少的资源做出很大的贡献。
