(1)The food's not half bad. (LDCE)
(2) The show was not half good.
在上面的句子里, not half bad 和 not half good 都译为“很好”, 这是怎么回事呢?
"Do you like chocolates?" "Oh, not half!"
可以引申为“一点也不(没有)”,相当于 not at all;2. “不是一半(而是整个地、完全地)”,相当于 quite, very, very much, a lot, to a considerable degree。
A. not half 与 bad 或 badly 连用时,常常具有第一种含义:
-
Your new suit isn't half bad. [“I like it.”] (CGEL)
-
You didn't stammer half so badly as you used to.
The rope is not half long enough.
-
It's not half cold today. (CGEL)
-
It isn't half windy. (Mis)
-
She doesn't half swear. [“She swears a great deal.”] (CGEL)
-
“Do you like chocolates?” “Oh, not half!” “你喜欢吃巧克力吗?”“啊,非常喜欢!” one and a half...is/are
One and a half months has elapsed.” One and a half apples is left on the table.”
One and a half years have passed since we last met. (CGEL)
