上面的解答是错误的。实际上，rather既可以修饰形容词(副词)的原级，也可以修饰形容词(副词)的比较级。ALD(89年版)明确指出：used before comparatives(用于比较级之前):

This hotel is rather more expensive than that. (ALD) 这家旅馆的收费比那家高得多。
She drives rather faster than she ought. (ALD) 她开车的速度比正常速度快许多。
Luna looked rather better-groomed in this picture than Harry had ever seen her in life. (J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) 月神在这一张照片中看起来比生活中更平和。(《哈利·波特与死亡圣徒》)

上面试题的出题者之所以把 D(hardly) 看作是唯一正确的答案, 而把 A(rather) 排除在正确答案之外, 可能是因为他们认为 rather 不能修饰具有褒义的形容词或副词, 或者认为 rather 不能修饰形容词或副词的比较级, 但这种观点是不符合实际的。按照英语惯用法, 选 A 并没有错误, 见 rather $^{1}$ , premodifications of comparatives。
