上面课文中的的 once 从句是个省略形式的时间状语从句: Once[they were] on the boat, ... 在由 when, while, once 引导的时间状语从句中, 当其主语与主句的主语一致时, 常常省略主语和 be[参见 once(conj.)², when²⁹]:

1. Metals expand when heated and contract when cooled. 金属加热时就膨胀, 冷却时就收缩。
