virtue最常见的意义确实是“美德”（a good moral quality）。就整个句子而言，译为“美德”是没有什么错误的。但从上文以及整篇文章主题思想来看，这种译法却是值得商榷的。文章的主题思想是：体育比赛会激起好斗情绪，国际体育比赛是公开的模拟战争。如果各国人民把体育比赛看作是对他们国家美德检验的话，那就不会发生大规模的敌对活动了。也就不会把国际体育比赛看作是公开的模拟战争了。可见最后一句译文是与全篇文章的主题思想相矛盾的。其实，virtue在这里可以译为优点(merit, advantage)或力量(strength, power)。
