plastic 是指“塑性的”吗?
plastic 既可作“塑性的”解，又可作“塑料”解。在翻译上面的句子时，到底应取哪个意思呢？单单根据语言知识是很难判定的。大家知道，塑性是指“材料或物体受力时，能产生显著的残余变形而不即行断裂的性质”。这里作者不是要告诉读者磁带是否具有塑性，而是在说它是由什么材料制成的。因此，取第二个含义比较合适，可能有人说：“塑料”的英文名称不是 plastics 吗？不错，许多英美出版的辞书都说名词 plastic 常用复数形式，有些辞书甚至只收录复数名词 plastics。事实上，名词 plastic 用单数形式的情况也不乏其例。例如：
