《英语惯用法大词典》(p.1610)指出, responsible 作“负有责任的”解时, 其否定式是 not responsible; responsible 作“认真负责的”解时, 其否定式是 irresponsible, 并举出下面两例:
He is not responsible(for that). 那件事不能怪他。
He is an irresponsible person. 他是个很不负责的人。
请问英语的实际使用情况究竟是怎样的呢？
对于初学者上面的说法还是很有用的。但是对 irresponsible 作进一步的研究，就会发现它还有其他的含义。让我们先查看一下英英词典：irresponsible adj. 1. not responsible for conduct, etc; not to be blamed or punished...2. without a proper sense of responsibility; not trustworthy(ALD). The New Collins Concise English Dictionary 注明 irresponsible = not capable of bearing responsibility。我们从 ALD 和 NCCED 的释义可以看出，irresponsible 除作“不认真负责的”“无责任心(感)的”“不可靠的”解之外，也作“不承担责任的”“毋须承担责任的”“无力承担责任的”解。请看下面的实例：
