help sb. do sth./help sb. to do sth.

这种说法不符合英语的实际情况。在英语里实际上并不存在这样的区分。

1. I can't make you happy myself; but I can help another man to do it. 我本人是不会使你幸福的；但是我可以协助另一个男人做到这一点。

2. The term “technology” refers to the discoveries and inventions that help people improve their way of life. (TOEFL) “技术”这个术语是指有助于人们改善生活方式的发现和发明。

很显然,在句(1)里,绝不是动词 help 的主语来完成 to do it 这个动作,而是 another man 来完成 to do it 这个动作。而在句(2)里,绝不是 the discoveries and inventions 和 people 一起去改善生活方式。

我们认为，A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language 的作者们的解释是符合英语的实际情况的：“在 help 所使用的两种结构中，带 to 的结构在英国英语中更常见，而不带 to 的结构在美国英语中更常见”。另外，A. S. Hornby 的建议对于我们也是很有帮助的：“对于学习英语的外国学生来说，在拿不准 help 之后是否用 to 时，用 to 总是不会错。”
