上面的例句引自 F. T. Wood 的著作,但 Wood 本人并不把上句中的 tight 看成是副词,而把它看成是形容词,说它充当结果补足语(a complement of result),其意义是:so that it is/was tight。他把 tight 的这种用法同 loose 和 firm 的类似用法作了对比:The nut worked loose; allow the mixture to stand till it sets firm.(见 Current English Usage,p.271)类例:
