demand/require/request

从语义上看,demand 表示有正当权利的要求,因此含有“坚决或强烈要求”(You ask for it very forcefully.)的意思。require 表示“要求所必须的东西”(If you require sth. or if sth. is required, you need it or it is necessary.)或者“法律、协定、规章以及其他客观情况的要求”。request 则表示“有礼貌的请求”或“正式的请求”。你从下列实例中可以感到它们语义的差别：

1. They are demanding higher wages... 他们要求提高工资……

2. The policeman demanded his name and address. 警察要求他说出姓名和住址。

3. Do you require anything else? 你还要求(需要)别的吗?

4. I've done all that is required by law. 我已做到了法律所要求的一切事情。

5. Many people have requested this next song. 许多人要求听下面这首歌。

6. Passengers are requested not to smoke( = a notice in a bus). 请勿吸烟(公共汽车中的告示)。

从语法上看,它们的共同点是:

demand, require 和 request 都可以接 that 宾语从句, 并且都要求宾语从句使用现在虚拟式或 should + 动词原形, 见 request, should $^{4,5}$ 。
