above/over ²

above 与 over 均表示“在……上方”的意思,但 over 常常表示恰好的垂直关系,或者含有空间上接近(closeness)的含义。above 只是笼统地表示“高于……”：

1. We flew above the clouds. 我们在云层上面飞行。

2. The moon was now above the trees in the east. 月亮挂在东方的树梢上。

3. The castle stands on a hill above the valley. (不能用 over) 城堡建在一座小山上,位于山谷上面。

当表示“高于某个抽象的水平”时,应当使用 above:

1. The mountain is 1,000 feet above sea level. 这座山高海拔一千英尺。

2. His work is well above the average. 他的工作大大超过一般水平。

当表示温度零度 zero degree 以上时,也只能使用 above:

The temperature is three degrees above zero. 温度是零上三度。

如果表示温度在某个度数以上,则既可使用 above,也可使用 over:

The temperature is above/over $30^{\$circ} C. 温度是摄氏三十度以上。
