与该书配套的《教师教学用书》第三册(p.277)对上句作了如下的注解：
“was to change 是一个‘be + 不定式’的结构。这种结构通常用来表示安排要在将来做的事情(be 用现在式)，也可以表示曾经计划要做的事情(be 用过去式)。但是本句中的‘was to change’这个‘be + 不定式’结构并不表示曾经计划要做的事情，而是表示不可避免地将要发生的事；不是指事先做好的安排，而是指‘命中注定的事’。”
(2) Cook was to be in charge of this expedition as captain of the ship Endeavour. (SEFC,3, p.8)
《课文英汉对照译注》(高中第三册, 上)(广西师大出版社, p.31) 对上句作了如下注释:
“be to do sth. 表示根据安排即将发生的事情，作‘将要；准备’解释。例如：
They are to be married in June. 他们准备6月份结婚。
We were to take a journey round the world last year, but at the last minute I changed my mind. 去年我们准备作环球旅行，但是在最后一分钟，我改变了主意。”
读了上面的注解我仍然没有弄明白句(1)中 was to change 以及句(2)中 was to be 的真正含义。
应当明确指出,上述两书的解释把 was/were to 这一特殊用法与 be to 的一般用法混为一谈了,因而干扰了读者对 was to change 与 was to be 的正确理解。
事实上，上面两例中的 was to change 和 was to be in charge 均具有纯过去将来时的含义，见上条。
