如果把 The Random House Handbook 作者的解释看作是写作指导,那是完全正确的。但是,如果用他的观点来观察英语的实际使用情况,那就未免有失片面。因为在英语的实际使用上,part with 除用于表示“放弃”“摆脱”“舍弃”“卖掉”“解雇”之外,有时也用于表示“分别”。例如 The Concise Oxford Dictionary 中明确注明:“part from or with, say goodbye to”。这就证明 part with 也可用于表“分别”“告别”。例如:
