大家知道,汉语的“应该”可以表达两种含义:A. 道义上或责任上的“应该”,如,“你应该孝敬父母。”“你应该认真学习。”B. 表示估计或推测,如,“他昨天动身的,今天应该到了。”有趣的是,英语的 should 也具有这两种含义。上题中的 should 是表示估计或推测上的“应该”。当然也可以译为“可能”“该”“估计”“按理应当”等等。下面是一些类似的实例及其译法:

1. The report is written after careful investigation, so it should be reliable. 这份报告是经过周密调查写成的，所以该是可靠的。

2. So far as I know you shouldn't have any problems there. 据我所知,你们在那儿不应该有什么麻烦。

3. If we go downhill, we might find a stream, and if we follow the stream we should reach a farm, or a village or a bridge. 如果我们走下山去，也许会看到一条小溪；如果我们沿着这条小溪走去，我们应该到达一个农场，或者一个村庄，或者一座桥梁。

4. The mountains should be visible from here. 那些山从这儿看该是能看得见的。

5. There shouldn't be any problems. 不该有什么问题的。
