下面是《英语难题400则》(北京师范大学出版社,1993年,p.50-51)第64条问答：
“▲问[64] 关于 but,《英语学习》85年第2期指出:but 在 Yesterday evening, he did nothing but watch TV. 一句中之所以接原形动词 watch,而不用 watching,是因为 but 是连词而不是介词。我认为,恰恰相反,but 应为介词,因为介词可以带作宾语用的不定式或动名词,而连词前后动词的语法单位应该对等,如:An hour late for dinner, he couldn't sit down but circled the long dining room table. (College English II, p. 214) (but 作连词,前后皆为动词的过去式)。您说是吗?至于为什么...he did nothing but watch TV. 中 but 之后用动词原形而不用 to watch 或 watching,也请指教。
▲答 He did nothing but (he did) watch TV. “but” 在这里用作连词, he did 省略。He couldn't sit down but (he) circled the long dining room table. "but" 也是用作连词。我也曾见过 He did nothing but watching.... 等于 He did nothing but (he did) watching. (用动名词,但不多见;词典上彼此参考引用未见及此也罢。也可能这句用动名词 watching 以达到强调的目的,把 watching TV 看做一件较重要的事去做。) 又:《新英汉词典》增订本第 154 页上把“but”列入 prep. 范围内举的例证: Last evening I did nothing but(介词) repair(不定式 to repair 用作介词 but 的宾语) his farm tools. 这句也有所根据,因为各词典编辑者仁者见仁,智者见智,而我们不必厚此薄彼。我手边所有的词典中多数把 “but 加不定式” 的这个 but 归类于 conj. 范围。我个人不注意语法名词而只把 “nothing but” 算做 “only” 就够了:我认为 He did nothing but watch TV. 这句是 He only watched TV. 的强调手段而已。语言先有惯用,然后才有所谓语法,各人有各自的分析角度和相应的观点”。
答者并没有提出一条语法规则来解释在何种情况下使用 but to do (but + 带 to 的动词不定式)，在何种情况下使用 but do (but + 不带 to 的动词不定式)。这是不是意味着这两种用法可以任意使用呢？
这两种用法并不是可以任意使用的。现代语言学家们对于这两种用法已归纳出了明确的规则:在一般情况下,表示“例外”含义的 but 与动词不定式连用时,应接带 to 的不定式,但是,当它的前面有实义动词 do(does, did)时,动词不定式符号 to 常常被省略,但并非强制性的。请看下面的实例:
