quite a(an)/a quite

“× In the circumstances, it was a quite rude answer.

In the circumstances, it was quite a rude answer.

quite a/an 后接形容词, 再接名词, 本是一种句式结构, 其中 a/an 不能放在 quite 之前。”

quite a(an) + 形容词 + 名词和 a quite + 形容词 + 名词都是可以接受的结构。

  1. We had a quite good time. (J. B. Heaton et. al)

  2. This is a quite comfortable house. (Dreiser)

M. SwanPEU 中说: “Quite can also be put after a/an, but this is only possible if there is an adjective(a quite good film)...

《朗文英语语法》说:“quite a/an(a quite)+形容词+名词具有积极的修辞效果:

It is quite an interesting film/a quite interesting film. (p. 262)
