attributive1

We live in a world which is full of misery and ignorance, and the plain duty of each and all of us is to try to make the little corner he can influence somewhat less miserable and somewhat less ignorant than it was before he entered it.

请指出 he can influence 的句法功能。

原文中的 he can influence 本是 the little corner 的定语,但译者却给译成状语了。

This decline in vigour with the passing of time is called ageing. (New Concept English, Book 4, L. 37)

句中的 with the passing of time 是状语吗?

(1) Within the past two decades, four technological developments have produced profound changes in our way of life.

从语义上说, our way of life 是“我们的生活方式”, 而不是“我们的生活能接触到的”; 从语法上说, in our way of life 是名词 changes 的定语, 而不是谓语动词 have produced 的状语。

(2) To begin with, we can expect applied science to produce a vast increase in entirely new synthetic products of all kinds. (A Course in Basic Scientific English, p. 69)

从语法上看,介词短语 in entirely new synthetic productsa vast increase 的定语,而不是 to produce 的状语;从逻辑上看,new synthetic productsa vast increase 有主谓关系。

  1. A decrease in resistance or an increase in voltage makes the current large.

  2. By flowing over these tubes, the steam is caused to transmit some of its heat to the liquid and a rapid drop in temperature occurs.

As Galileo watched the lamps swinging to and fro he became much interested. Millions of people had seen moving in this same way but not one had ever thought of discovering any useful fact connected with the phenomenon.

请问 connected with the phenomenon 在句中作什么成分?

分词短语 connected with the phenomenonany fact 的定语,而不是 had thought 的状语。

[ Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. ] Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. (Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address)

后置定语 so conceived and so dedicated 是修饰 that nation, or any nation 这两个名词短语呢(如原译文所理解的那样),还是仅仅修饰 any nation 这一个名词短语呢?

我们认为,在你提问的句子里,后置定语 so conceived and so dedicated 仅仅修饰 any nation,并不修饰 that nation. (2)that nationany nation so... dedicated 并不是并列概念,而是下位概念与上位概念的关系;(3)作者在 or 之前使用了逗号,意在表明后置定语 so...dedicatedthat nation 无关。

the girl in the armchair with the pretty legs

请问介词短语 with the pretty legs 是修饰前面的名词 the girl 吗?

  1. the girl who is in the armchair and who has the pretty legs

  2. the girl who is in the armchair which has the pretty legs

... and the election campaigns for the London County Council taught Graham Wallace a good deal he could not have learned in books about human nature in politics.

原译者把介词短语 about human nature in politics 译成了 books 的定语。但王岷源教授给吕先生写信,指出介词短语 about human nature in politicsa good deal 的定语,而不是 books 的定语。

the smiles of delight on all the faces that he liked

请问定语从句是修饰 all the faces 呢, 还是修饰 the smiles 呢?

  1. the requirements of the courses which are listed (which 从句是修饰 the courses 呢, 还是修饰 the requirements 呢?)

  2. There are a number of methods of joining metal articles together, depending on the type of metal and the strength of the joint which is required. (which 从句是修饰 the strength 呢, 还是修饰 the joint 呢?)

(1) When all her Christminster cake had been disposed of she took upon her arm the empty basket, and the cloth which had covered the standing she had hired.

不难看出,定语从句 she had hired 并不是修饰 the cloth,而是修饰 the standing 的。

(2) Other animals were trapped in tar pits, like the elephants, sabre-toothed cats, and numerous other creatures that are found at Rancho la Brea, which is now just a suburb of Los Angeles. (New Concept English, Book 4, L. 26)

根据上下文以及三个并列成分 (elephants, sabre-toothed cats, and numerous other creatures) 共用一个定冠词 the 这一语言线索, 可以判定 that 从句是说明前面三个并列成分的, 而不是只说明 numerous other creatures 的。

(3) The curtain was rung down in that phase of history, at least, by the sudden invention of the hydrogen bomb, of the ballistic missile and of rockets that can be aimed to hit the moon.

[原译]……由于能够击中月球的弹道导弹和火箭的突然发明……(《第三帝国的兴亡》)本条的分析见 that(pron.) 3^{3}

science and educational films

A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language 便举过这样的例子: country and western music 乡村音乐和西方音乐 类例: arts and cultural affairs 艺术和文化事物 sports and social facilities 体育和社会设施

[ In 1960 an American psychiatrist named William Dement published experiments dealing with the recording of eye-movements during sleep. ] He showed that the average individual's sleep cycle is punctuated with peculiar bursts of eye-movements, some drifting and slow, others jerky and rapid. (New Concept English, Book 4, L. 23)
