《新英汉辞典》和《英汉大辞典》均把 what if 译为:1. 如果……将会怎么样;2. 即使……又有什么关系。但是用这种译法来翻译下列句子似乎有困难。
What if you join us for lunch?
what if 除了表示“如果……将会怎么样”(What if a storm should come up?)之外,还有另一种用法,是一般辞典所没有给出的:what if 可以引出一个建议、邀请或要求,它引出的从句大都使用一般现在时,但也可以使用过去时。使用过去时是为了使建议变得委婉一些,显得不那么肯定:
