rouse/arouse

rouse 的原义是“唤醒某人”，由此产生的比喻义为“引起、唤起、激起”，如 rouse one's anger（spirits, energies），rouse enthusiasm（curiosity, interest, suspicion）。还要记住，rouse 既可作及物动词，也可作不及物动词：

1. The noise roused me from a deep sleep. (LDCE) 吵闹声把我从熟睡中惊醒。

2. I was roused by the telephone bell. 我被电话铃声唤醒了。

3. I roused early this morning. (vi) (LDCE) 我今天早晨醒得很早。

4. His conduct roused their suspicion. 他的行动引起了他们的怀疑。

5. His speech roused the audience to such a pitch of fury that the police were forced to escort him away hastily for his own safety. 他的讲话引起了观众一阵狂怒，为了他的人身安全，警方不得不赶忙护送他离开。

arouse 在词义上与 rouse 相同,在许多情况下可以互换。但是语气要比 rouse 弱得多,而且只能用作及物动词。常用搭配有: interest, sympathy, curiosity, excitement, criticism, suspicion.

1. We aroused him from his deep sleep. 我们把他从熟睡中唤醒。

2. You arouse my curiosity. 你激起了我的好奇心。

3. The exhibition of poor sportsmanship aroused a sense of disgust and humiliation in all who witnessed it. （他们）表现出了低劣的体育风格，使在场的观众无不感到厌恶和羞辱。
