therefor/therefore

therefor与therefore在意义上是不同的。therefor是个副词，作“为此”（for that, for this, for it)解，用于正式语体，尤其是法律文件中：

1. He will be paid therefor. 他会为此得到报酬的。

2. My client did commit crime, but his motive therefor has not been established. (Crews) 我的当事人确实犯了罪，但是他犯罪的动机尚未确定。

3. He promised to give a building for a hospital and the land necessary therefor. (WBD) 他

答应捐一个用作医院的建筑物以及为此所必需的土地。

therefore 在词义上相当于 thus, consequently, for that reason, as a result of that (因此, 所以, 结果)。(and) therefore 常用于连接两个并列的分句, therefore 亦可用作从属连词的关联词: because... therefore, seeing (that)... therefore:

1. She went to a party and therefore did not study her lessons. (WBD) 她去参加了一个聚会,因而没去上课。

2. He was the only candidate; therefore he was elected. (WBD) 他是唯一的候选人, 因此被选上了。

3. The novelist, therefore, has a special responsibility both to the present and the past of his country. (Fox) 因此, 小说家对国家的现在和过去都负有特殊的责任。

4. He was busy; therefore he could not come. 他很忙,所以不能来。

5. It rained; therefore the game was called off. (MD) 下雨了,因此比赛取消了。

请注意:在上面的句子里,therefore 之前使用的是分号。如果与 and 连用,就可使用逗号或者不用标点符号:

1. He injured his leg and therefore could not play in the game. (MD) 他的一条腿受伤了，因此他未能参加比赛。

2. I decided not to buy the car, and therefore was not prepared to pay therefor. 我决定不买那辆车，所以就没准备为此付款。
