the way/in the way

句(A)中 my way 和句(B)中的 the way 应分析为名词短语充当方式状语,亦可以理解为省略了介词 in:

1. She cooks chicken in the way I like. 她以我喜欢的方法烹调鸡肉。

2. They plant corn (in) the same way their ancestors used to 500 years ago. 他们种玉米的方法同他们的祖先 500 年前种玉米的方法是一样的。

但是,当 way 之前有形容词作定语时,或者后面有定语时则常常使用介词 in:

1. He always writes in a careless way. 他总是写得不认真。

2. He smiles in a superior way. 他高傲地笑着。

3. She always greets me in a friendly way. 她总是友好地向我打招呼。

4. They did it in very much the same way. (CGEL) 他们做那件事的方法颇为相似。

5. They are just pretty patterns. We like them in the same way that we like pretty curtain material. (New Concept English, Book 2, L. 26) 它们只不过是漂亮的图案罢了。我们就像爱漂亮的窗帘布那样喜爱他们。

[附注]有些英语语法学家干脆把句(B)中的 the way 解释为连词,其意义和用法相当于引导方式从句的 as:

1. Joyce looked at her the way a lot of girls did. Joyce 像许多女孩那样瞧了瞧她。

2. I fixed things the way he wanted. 我按他的要求把事情搞好了。

3. This steak is cooked just the way I like it. 这牛排是按我喜欢的那样做的。

4. All I know is that no one understands me better and no one can make me laugh the way Billdoes. (Hillary Living History) 我所知道的,就是没有人比比尔更了解我,也没有人能像比尔那样让我开心地笑。

5. We must provide for our nation the way a family provides for its children. (B. Clinton, My Life) 我们必须像家庭供养孩子那样供养我们的国家。(《我的生活》)
