我认为，在中学英语教科书的注释中，最好不要把上面的 could 扯到虚拟语气用法中去，因为这会把学生弄得更加糊涂。《课文注释》说上句中的 could 是委婉的提出建议，似有牵强附会之嫌，因为 I could ring... 毫无建议之意。其实，在这里只需指出，could 除了用作 can 的过去时之外，还可代替 can 表示现在或将来的“能力”（ability）、“可能性”（possibility）或“允许”（permission）。上句中的 could 是代替 can，表示现在的“能力”兼“意愿”。

许多中国学生和教师一看到 could 便把它看作是 can 的过去时形式,殊不知它还可以用作 can 的替代词,用于指现在或将来。R. Quirk 等人在 CGEL(§4·50)中指出:

“尽管从历史上看,大部分情态动词都有与现在时形式配对的过去时形式(can/could, may/might, will/would, shall/should),但是,'过去时'形式,从意义的观点来看,只是在某些方面作这种分类才是有用的。”

据此,我们有必要向中国学生和教师着重强调 could 的非过去时用法。

A. 指现在或将来的“能力”(ability in the present or in the future) 或者“意愿”(willingness):

1. Could you run the business by yourself? (指现在) 你能独立管理这个企业吗?

2. Perhaps I could see you tomorrow. (RGSE) (指将来) 也许明天我能够去看你。

3. Come when you like, I could see you at any time. (RGSE)(指将来) 愿意来的时候就来吧,我任何时间都可以会见你。

4. “How much would a suitable dress cost?” “…I think I could get one for about four hundred francs.” [《许国璋英语》(4), p. 49]（指将来）“买一身像样的衣服得花多少钱？” “…我认为我大约花400法郎就能买一身。”

5. Maybe we could go shopping this evening. (指将来) 今天晚上我们也许能去购物。

B. 指现在或将来的“可能性”：

1. It could be very interesting to watch an Arab and an Englishman talking together. (指通常情况) 观看阿拉伯人和英国人交谈,可能是非常有趣的。

2. Don't eat it. It could be a toadstool. (CCEG)(指现在) 不要吃这个东西。它可能是毒菇。

3. There could be trouble at the Springboks match tomorrow. (MEV) (指将来) 明天在斯普林博克的比赛上可能会有麻烦。

C. 指现在或将来的“允许”：

1. I wonder if I could use your phone. (指现在) 不知道我是不是可以用你的电话。

2. Could I see you now? (EGS) (指现在) 现在我可以去看你吗?

3. Permission is granted. We can/could go next week. (RGSE)(指将来) 已得到允许。我们下周可以走。

4. A: Could I see you tomorrow, then? B: Yes, (I think) you could. (EGS)(指将来) A: 那么, 我可以明天去看你吗? B: 是的, (我想) 你可以来。

由于 could 比 can 更加具有试探性和不肯定性,所以在表示请求和建议时常常用 could 代替 can,显得更加有礼貌:

1. Could you lend me your pen? 你能把笔借给我用吗？

2. Could you open that door for me? 请替我把门打开,好吗?

3. You could be cleaning the office while I am away. 我外出的时候,你可以打扫办公室。请做下面的英语试题:
