请问 could 真的不能用于现在时吗？

上面的试题有重大失误:出题者忽略了 could 并不总是用作 can 的过去式,有时亦可表示现在或将来的可能性。所以 PEG 提出:“could 用作 may/might 的替换词”。下面是一些有说服力的例证:

I wonder where Tom is. ——He may/might/could be in the library. (Perhaps he is in the library.) (PEG) 我不知道汤姆在哪里。——他也许(可能)在图书馆。
