lowly 常用作形容词,作“卑微的”解,如 a man of lowly birth(一个出身卑微的男人), teach sb. to be lowly(教导某人谦卑)。用作副词时,也常常具有这个含义:

如同 highly 并不表示“空间上高的”，而表示“程度上高的”（见 high）一样，lowly 也不表示“空间上低的”，而表示“程度上低的”，常常用于比喻义：
