我牢牢记住了一条语法规则:nor引起的分句只能用在另一个否定分句之后。例如:

但是,我所提出的句子却是 nor 分句用在肯定句之后。这是怎么回事呢?

根据现代英语惯用法,在正式的语体里,即使第一个分句是肯定句,也可以使用 nor:

  1. We have many enemies; nor can we be sure of all our friends. (AED) 我们有许多敌人;对我们的朋友也不能全都相信。

  2. All the students were obviously very miserable. Nor were the teachers satisfied with the conditions at the school. (CGEL) 所有的学生显然都很忧伤,教师也不满意学校的状况。

  3. This unique product carries a brand name that represents an entire country; nor is this an accident. [ = "and this is no accident" ] (CGEL) 这种无与伦比的产品拥有代表全国的牌号;而这绝不是偶然的。

在句(1-2)中第一个分句具有含蓄的否定的含义,而在句(3)中第一个分句则毫无否定含义。后一用法仅限于庄重的正式语体。
