none the less/nonetheless

Wood 认为,标准英国英语至今仍坚持写作三个词 none the less,而在美国英语中则写作一个词:nonetheless。Crews 则认为 none the less 要求后面跟形容词,而 nonetheless 仅用作句子副词(sentence adverb),意思等于 nevertheless: Nonetheless, she was unhappy.(尽管如此,她仍然是不愉快的。)但是,英美的写作者并不遵守上面的规定。例如,许多辞典没有收入 nonetheless 这一词条。none the less 后面也不总是跟形容词:

1. None the less it is one of the most powerful weapons the workers possess. (Pollit) 尽管如此, 这仍不失为工人们所拥有的最强有力的武器之一。

2. They had apologized to him, but he was none the less angry. (Clark) 他们向他道了歉，但是他仍然很生气。
