译者将 tend to 译为“往往”是不恰当的，因为从物理学上讲，气体并不是往往具有膨胀的趋势，而是永远具有这种趋势。其次，气体并没有不受限制地膨胀的能力。装在刚性的容器内的气体是不能不受限制地膨胀的。可见 tend to 不能译为“往往”，indefinitely 也不能译为“不受限制地”，而应分别译为“具有……的趋势”（have a tendency）和“无限地”。
