no more... than + 从句 ¹

从翻译的角度看,这类句型有一个很重要的特点,就是 than 后面的从句在形式上是肯定的,在意义上则是否定的;表面上表示不同等的比较,实质上则是表示等同关系。如:

1. He's no more your friend than I'm your mother. 他不是你的朋友,就像我不是你的母亲一样。

2. A fool can no more see his own folly than he can see his ears. 蠢人不能自知其蠢，就像不能自见其耳一样。

3. We have no more right to consume happiness without producing it than to consume wealth without producing it. 我们如不创造幸福, 就无权享受幸福, 正如不创造财富就无权享受财富一样。

4. You're no more the queen than I am Julius Caesar. 你不是女王,就像我不是凯撒一样。

5. He was no more successful than I. (Hillary, Living History) 他跟我一样都没能成功。(希拉里，《亲历历史》)

6. Unfortunately, from the bewildered look in Langdon's eyes, Sophie sensed the American had no more idea than she did why her grandfather had thrown them together. (Dan Brown, The Da Vinci Code) 不幸的是，从兰登那迷惑的眼神中，索菲看得出这个美国人和她

从上面的例子很容易看出, no more... than 常常用来表示类比, 即用人们熟悉或已知的事物去比喻不熟悉或未知的事物。因此, 上例似应译为:

也许他的生命一朝结束之后，他的一生将不会在世界上留下什么痕迹，就像投入水中的石子不会在水面上留下什么痕迹一样。

《现代英语用法词典》(外研社, p.888) 将这类句子里的 no more... than 译为“比……更不”，不仅没有触及问题的实质，而且碰上有的句子往往无从译起，如：

He's no more fit to be a minister than a school boy would be.
