《新概念英语》中译本第二册第35课将thief译为“贼”，而将第三册第58课中的burglar译为“窃贼”。由此看来，thief与burglar是同义词了。
词典解答
thief是指“偷东西的人”“盗窃者”（a person who steals something from another person），而 burglar 是“入室偷窃者”（a thief who breaks into a house and steals things）。可见，thief 是 burglar 的上位概念。另外，《新英汉词典》(p. 151)将 burglar 译为“夜盗”，也是不准确的，因为不管是夜间入室偷窃者，还是白天入室偷窃者，都称作 burglar。
