As students of science you are probably sometimes puzzled by the terms ‘pure’ and ‘ap-plied’ science.
这里的‘pure’ and ‘applied’ science 显然是指两件事(复数),为什么 science 不用复数呢?
当 science 表示“反映自然、社会、思维等客观规律的知识体系”时，是不可数名词。而不可数名词即使表示复数概念，也只能采用单数形式。这是意义和形式之间的矛盾，是无法克服的。

但是, 当 science 指具体的科学分支(即抽象名词部分化)时, 就是可数名词了: the natural sciences, social sciences。
