no more... than + 从句 ³

在像句(1)那类句子里, more 是副词。从表面上看, 这种句型表示不同等的比较, 实质上却是表示等同关系(用人们熟悉的事物去比喻不熟悉的事物); 另外, than 后面的从句在形式上是肯定的, 但在意义上却是否定的。让我们再补充一些实例:

1. He's no more fit to be a minister than a school boy would be. 他不适于当部长,就像一个小学生不适于当部长一样。

2. Rachel is no more courageous than Saul (is). (CGEL) 雷切尔不勇敢, 就像索尔不勇敢一样。

3. I can no more apologize than I could kneel to them. (CGEL) 我不能向他们道歉,就像我不能对他们下跪一样。

4. She's no more enthusiastic than the others. (TOEFL) 她不热情,就像其他人不热情一样。

5. And most patent medicines were no more reliable than the itinerant merchants who sold them. (TOEFL) 大多数专利药品不可靠,就像卖这些药品的流动商人那样不可靠。

6. Even when doctors were available, they were often no more knowledgeable than their patients. (TOEFL) 即使有了医生，他们也常常像他们的病人那样缺少知识。

7. A home without love is no more a home than a body without a soul is a man. 没有爱情的家庭不能成为家庭,就像没有灵魂的躯体不能成为人一样。

但是, 当 more 用作限定词(如 more books)或名词短语的中心词(如 more of the books)时, no more... than 的含义常常为: “和……一样少”“仅仅跟……一样多”:

1. I have no more money than you have. (… only as much as) (CGEL) 我的钱跟你的一样少。

2. Ted got no more of the votes than he needed. (CGEL) 特德仅仅获得他所需要的选票。

但这并不是说,当 more 作限定词或名词短语的中心词时,no more...than 总是具有这里所说的第二种含义[如例(2)]。应当注意,当 more 修饰可分等级的名词时,no more...than 就会具有本条所说的第一种含义[如例(1)]:

1. She is no more a fool than you are. 她不是傻瓜,就如同你不是傻瓜一样。

2. They are no more scholars than my baby(is). 他们不是学者,就如同我的婴儿不是学者一样。
