应当注意，of $\$mathbf{N}_2 's中的 $\$mathbf{N}_2 's可用名词性物主代词来替换：

1. He is a great friend of ours. (ELD) 他是我们的好朋友。

2. I have been talking to a friend of yours. (CGEL) 我一直同你的一位朋友谈话。

3. Sid had been a good friend of Bill's and mine for years ... (Hillary, Living History) 西德是比尔与我多年来的好朋友……(希拉里，《亲历历史》)

还应当注意,上面讲到, ${\mathrm{<span\; class="latin-run">N</span>}}_1$N_{1} 一般是无定的(非定指的),但是英语里也存在着违背上述一般规则的特殊用法:在中心词之前加限定词 this 或 that(表示亲密和赞美或者表示否定或轻蔑):

1. Have you heard anything of this new novel of Carlstone's? (Yeats) 你听人谈到过卡尔斯顿那部新小说了吗？(赞美)

2. that irritating habit of her father's (CGEL) 她父亲的那个令人不快的习惯(否定)

3. Have you seen those sonnets of Hawkslow's? 你见到霍克斯洛那些十四行诗了吗？

4. That book of his will be a definite success. (LDCE) 他的那本书一定会获得成功。

5. that son of yours(CGEL) 你那个宝贝儿子(轻蔑)

6. Look at that big nose of his! (AEG) 瞧他那个大鼻子! (轻蔑)

一般考生掌握以上知识,就足够了。但是,英语教师(尤其是出英语测试题者)和英语研究者,则应搞清楚 a friend of my brother 到底是不是错误用法。我们可以肯定说,它并不是错误用法,而是另一种正确的表达方式。请看下面从英文原著中摘取的实例:

1. He's a close friend of my brother. (LDCE, p. 453) 他是我弟弟亲密的朋友。

标准答案为A。但是，B也是同样正确的。建议今后的英语试题不要再让学生在上述两个正确的结构之中进行选择。
