high/highly

high 既可用作形容词,也可用作副词。当表示空间高度或位置时,要使用副词 high:

1. He climbed high up the mountain. (MD) 他高高地向山上攀登。

2. They held high the banner of revolutionary struggle. (Gallacher) 他们高高举起革命斗争的旗帜。

当表示“很高的程度(上)”时,或者用于比喻义时,要使用副词 highly:

1. The Chinese were a highly civilized people long before Europeans were. 早在欧洲人进入文明时期之前中国人就是高度文明的民族了。

2. It was highly confidential. (Sinclair) 这是高度机密的。

3. He is very highly spoken of. (Voynich) 他很受称赞。

4. Modern alpinists try to climb mountains by a route which will give them good sport, and the more difficult it is, the more highly it is regarded. (New Concept English, Book 4, L.3) 现代的登山者总想找一条会给他们带来运动乐趣的登山途径，于是，途径越艰险，越受人重视。

5. Lastly, he is highly imaginative... (CBSE) 最后,科学家具有高度的想象力……

当用作形容词和分词的状语时,也大都使用 highly:highly developed(高度发达的),highly trained(受过高级训练的),highly pleased(很满意的),highly scientific(高度科学的),highly skilled(高技巧的),highly qualified(高水平的)。

但是在复合词中则大都使用 high: a high-pitched voice(高调的声音), high-heeled shoes (高跟鞋)。
