(1)It would be worth your while to talk to the editor. (ALD)
(2) It's not worth your while staying. (CGEL)
worth one's while(或 worthwhile)与 worth 不同,它不是介词,也不是形容词,因而不要求宾语(或补足语)。我们绝不要把 worth one's while(worthwhile)跟 worth 混为一谈。在你提出的两个句子里,to talk... 和 staying 并不是 worth your while 的宾语(或补足语),而是句子的真实主语(句首的 it 为形式主语)。此外,在含有 worth one's while 的句子里,还可用动词不定式或动名词作真实宾语(例 2,4):
-
It would be well worth your while to come to the meeting. (ALD)
-
You would find it well worth your while to come to the meeting. (ALD)
-
It's not worth your while reading this book, because it isn't accurate. (Chambers)
-
You will find it worth your while to read the book.
