up

up 和 down 的最基本含义是表示沿着垂直的方向的“向上”和“向下”。例如：

1. We walked up the hill and down the other side. (CGEL) 我们走上小山, 又沿山背面走下去。

2. He climbed up the hill/the stairs/the ladder. (LDCE) 他爬上山(楼梯/梯子)。

3. The bus climbed steadily up the road. (Hemingway) 公共汽车稳稳地爬上大路。

4. Jack and Jill went up the hill. (Wood) 杰克和吉尔走上山去。

但是，在 He walked up/down the street（road）。这样的句子里，在多数情况下，并不表示“向较高处走”或“向较低处走”的意思（有时也不排除这种可能性），而是表示“沿着”的意思。例如，ALD 在解释 walk down 时说：down = along（not necessary with reference to a lower level——不一定指向较低处）。你一定会问：既然 up 或 down = along，那么为什么不使用 along，而使用 up 或 down 呢？up 和 down 在这里就毫无区别了吗？

我们知道，当谈到人或物的移动时，不仅涉及到人或物的移动位置以及移动方向，而且常常还要涉及到移动方向和说话人的位置的关系。请比较汉语的“他进屋来了。”和“他进屋去了。”前一句话表示说话人在屋内，而后一句话表示说话人在屋外。英语里也有这种语言手段，来表示这层关系，up 表示移动方向“向着说话人或他的家”，down 则表示移动方向“离开说话人”。

He walked up the street. 他沿着街道走过来。

He walked down the street. 他沿着街道走过去。

让我们引用权威语言家们的论述来证明我们上面的解释和翻译。

... Then along came some people, running up the street. I dashed back in and phoned for help. When I went out again, the other driver was trying to move his car down the road a little...

CGEL 的作者们在解释上面的句子时说：“... The contrasting phrases up (the street) and down (the road) are interesting in making spatial reference not necessarily in terms of relative elevation (though this is not excluded). The immediate contrast is in terms of orientation again: up indicating an approach towards the speaker (and his home), down indicating the converse.” (p. 1449)
