respectable 和 respectful 是两个易混的词。但是如能抓住形容词后缀-able 和 -ful 的特点，还是很容易掌握它们之间的区别的。-able 可加在动词之后构成形容词，一般具有被动意义。observable（可被观察到的），breakable（易破碎的），loveable（可爱的），forgivable（可原谅的），respectable（受尊敬的，可敬的）。由后缀-ful 构成的形容词一般具有主动意义，helpful（有益的），useful（有用的）。respectful = showing respect，一般是指某人对他人的尊敬。请看下面的实例：
