neither...nor...is/are ²

1985年攻读硕士研究生入学考试英语试题中有这样一道改错题：Neither his training nor $\$frac{\text{his}}{\text{A}} experience $\$frac{\text{as}}{\text{B}} a railway engineer $\$frac{\text{qualify}}{\text{C}} him for his job.

答案为 C(要求将 qualify 改为 qualifies)。但我认为在 neither...nor...之后用动词复数 qualify 也是正确的。请看下面的实例：

1. Neither my father nor I were there that day. [《新编英语语法》(下), p. 791] 我父亲和我那天都不在哪儿。

2. Neither he nor his wife have the faintest idea of what lies beyond it. (同上) 他和他妻子对此外的事情所知甚少。
